ED Simulator in Second Life

Last week, this new prototype simulator in Second Life was utilized to train medical-surgical RN program students in three sections of the NURS 211 course here at Tacoma Community College. Basic concepts in the initial assessment and treatment of a patient, with an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and various dysrhythmias, were applied by the students. The simulator is currently being modified to be more user friendly and additional abilities are being added. Students will have access to this setting for the remainder of the quarter to practice various scenarios of their choosing. This setting will also be used in face to face courses to demonstrate application of concepts covered in other medical problems including brain, spinal cord, burns, kidney and liver. The student HUD can be seen at the lower left, which is used to assess and administer medications, oxygen, shocks, and other treatments. An instructor HUD is used to control the patient and data coming from it. I worked with David Bodily RN, BSN, nursing faculty at Western Wyoming Community College and others in Second Life.

John,
I really appreciate your blog. I am a nurse doing a masters in communication at U FL & in one class, we are doing education in second life. (But applied to teaching undergrads in journalism.) I felt for sure there had to be a way to apply this to nursing. I haven't worked as a nurse since 2004 & it's been years since education. I can't wait to show my prof what you've done.
Pretty cool!
